Simpson Desert Crossing FAQ
We are running a 7 day trip in 2024.
The Simpson Desert crossing itself takes 4 days and 3 nights, from one end of the desert to another. Trips may run east to west (Birsdville to Mt Dare) or west to east (Mt Dare to Birsdville) depending on the time of year and park conditions.
Based on feedback from previous riders, we run the trip as a full outback loop, starting and finishing at Marree, South Australia. This option takes 7 days. Marree is accessible via a bitumen highway from Port Augusta and in suitable for 2WD and trailer travel. Cars and trailers can be left at the caravan park in Marree for the duration of the trip.
Your entry fee covers the cost of all food and fuel while in the desert, park entry fees, support vehicles and drivers - equipped with water tanks and all necessary support supplies, UHF and satellite communications, experienced guides and sweep riders to navigate and assist with anything you might need on the trails and the back-up of a mechanical professional and registered nurse on the team, with general mechanical and medical supplies.
Over the 4 days of the desert crossing, all food is provided (breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks).
While traveling the iconic Oodnadatta and Birdsville outback tracks, we stop at various attractions and pubs where there are options for you to purchase larger pub meals, local baked goods and drinks if desired.
We have you covered from start to finish, so you can relax and focus on your ride. Our experienced guides will navigate through the desert and sweep riders will support you to ride at your pace and provide assistance wherever needed.
Our support vehicles and experienced drivers carry all gear including fuel, food, water and luggage for riders. There is no need to set your bike up with additional fuel or luggage. We carry equipment and supplies for common mechanical issues and manage motorcycle recovery if needed. We have a mechanical professional on the team.
Medical protocol and supplies are set up. We have an experienced remote registered nurse on the team and emergency communications if required, however unlikely.
We have a fully equipped camp kitchen and an excellent menu. While in the desert, we do an evening campfire with all the bells and whistles. We take care of everything, right down to the photography, leaving you time to soak up every drop of your Simpson Desert experience.
You'll need to get yourself and your bike to the start point and home from the end point.
For most supported trips, we start and finish at the same point in Marree, South Australia. Marree can be accessed via bitumen highway from Port Augusta and is suitable for 2WD and trailer travel. You may wish to arrange to car pool with other participants. We are happy to facilitate linking customers up to carpool, with permission.
We often have riders invite a friend or family member to tag along for the desert crossing in a 4WD. We are happy to include additional 4WDs in our convoy (strictly no trailers), with a tagalong fee applied. Please contact us if you'd like to arrange a 4WD tagalong as there are a few requirements we need to go through.
Be at the start point the morning of departure ready to go. Specific meet times will be provided in a detailled itinerary with pre-ride information. Many riders prefer to arrive the day (or days) before and arrange their own accomodation for this time at the caravan park or pub, go for a braaap or two, explore the local scenery and enjoy time socialising together.
You must hold a valid motorcycle licence (a learner licence is acceptable) and your bike must be registered (recreational rego is acceptable).
You should have standard health insurance for yourself (including ambulance cover) and comprehensive insurance for your bike.
We have strict luggage size limitations to ensure that we have space in support vehicles. Please ensure all of your gear (excluding riding gear which you'll be wearing) fits into a 30L duffel bag. We recommend riders re-wear riding gear, noting there are laundry facilities at Birdsville, Mt Dare and Marree. We can provide duffel bags for personal gear if you don't have one. We have tents that can be loaned out if you do not have a suitable one. We do not recommend the use of swags unless they meet size requirements. We will provide participants with packing lists - a 30L duffel will be more than enough for personal items needed for the trip.
If you intend to purchase meals or keepsakes at the various iconic outback pubs we intend to stop at along the way, please ensure you have cash in hand, as eftpos communications can be patchy in very remote locations.
You require at a minimum: off-road helmet, goggles/glasses, abrasion resistant shirt/pants, gloves, adventure/motocross riding boots and a 2-3L hydration pack. Scrutineers will check gear and you will not be permitted to ride if you do not have essential gear in working condition.
In the cooler months, an adventure or windproof jacket is needed. You will need some warm clothes for camping overnight.
Some riders choose to wear additional protection such as knee braces, roost guard, back protector, kidney belt, armoured jersey, neck brace etc, which is up to you.
Bring sunscreen and a hat/sunglasses.
Crossings in the springtime are warm. Temperatures can be well above 30°C and heat stress is a very real risk. Evenings in September are typically warm, but the occasional cold front can sweep through, so it is best to come prepared with a tent, sleeping bag and jumper just in case.
Autumn to winter is cooler. Temperatures may peak at 25-30°C during the day, but mornings and evenings are brisk. Evenings can get down to 5-10°C (sometimes less!) so come prepared to camp and ride in these temperatures. A tent, sleeping bag and warm clothes are essential.
While we usually experience sunny weather, the occasional rainstorm is known to sweep through.
We are required to follow the instructions of rangers and parks authorities at all times, including complying with any park or track closures due to unforeseen and/or extreme weather events. Unexpected closures happen from time to time, which may cause planned routes to be altered at short notice. Our guides have excellent knowledge of routes and are equipped with remote communication capabilities, should any alterations be required.
We can accommodate most enduro, motocross and dual sport bikes, both 2T and 4T engines, small and large. You might be be surprised at what bikes can handle a crossing with the right support.
We have a small number of bikes available to hire for a daily fee. Please contact us to discuss bike rental if required.
We're partial to DRZ400's, but the group has had many other bikes such as Yamaha WRs, Honda CRFs, Beta RRs, KTM EXCs, Husqvarna TE/FEs, Kawasaki KLXs, Sherco SEs and many others. We advise against bikes under 125cc or over 500cc unless you are an experienced sand rider on your chosen bike. Please contact us to discuss in this instance. We are unable to accommodate very large adventure bikes (eg Africa Twin).
We recommend you bring your bike with spare brake/clutch levers and a spark plug, as these are model specific. We strongly recommend that you fit heavy duty tubes and have suitable off-road tyres that can handle both sandy and rocky terrain.
The Munga Thirri (Simpson Desert) is one of the most magnificent places on earth. The dunes are very soft, tall and whooped-out, requiring committed attack. The sections between the dunes are open, firm and flat, with a small amount of ground vegetation.
We ride at a steady pace and stop every so often to allow riders to rest and regroup. We still find plenty of time to have fun, enjoy the dunes and let our hair down! We don’t ride too close together so everyone can have their own space and avoid dust.
A Simpson Desert crossing is a big achievement and is attainable for most riders with practise. Leading up to the crossing, we can assist you to prepare if needed. We have networks to coaches in all states and can arrange training.
We accommodate all rider paces within the group. You do not have to be a fast rider to complete a crossing. Ride at your level of comfort and our guides will support you as much as you need.
You must do adequate preparation to ride across the desert. It is a physically and metally tough journey.
You need to be competent to deal with fluffy, rutted and whooped out sand and to attack steep dunes with momentum. The Simpson Desert is not easy going, but with dedicated, consistent practice it is achievable. Many riders that have completed a crossing were new to sand riding when they signed on, but put in consistent preparation in the lead up with the goal of being ready for the crossing. We love to see riders setting big goals - and we want to make sure you acheive your goal of a Simpson Desert Crossing. We cannot stress enough how important it is to get some solid sand experience in before the trip. We have networks with coaches across Australia and can connect you with rider training if needed. Please contact us if you'd like to discuss your preparation.
You don’t need to be a fitness enthusiast, but general bike and cardio fitness is needed as we will be riding full, consecutive days. We find that preparing by doing plenty of riding and some cardio or gym work a few times per week is sufficient.
You will be required to complete an entry form which includes medical details and a declaration that you are fit to ride. Please talk with us if you have any health concerns that may impact your ability to carry out a crossing. If you are unsure of your medical fitness to complete the crossing, check with your doctor. Bring essential medicines with you, with adequate contingency.
While we take every precaution, as motorcyclists we are all well aware of the inherent risk of injury. Each of us are responsible for our own decisions and actions behind the handlebars.
Heat is a significant risk during the warmer months. However cold is also a risk during the winter time. While we provide support and assistance, you need to ensure you are physically prepared for these conditions and have the right gear. We have protocol in place to respond to riders who may be experiencing effects of heat. We provide suggested packing lists to all riders beforehand.
If we respect wildlife it is not problematic. We take normal precautions such as making sure tents are zipped up, not leaving food out and carry bite kits.
We camp as a group and stay together to ensure personal safety of one another while on the trip.
When arranging your travel to and from the start and finish point, ensure your vehicle is equipped to safely carry out the remote journey. We are seasoned remote travelers, so contact us if you need advice.
You need to be able to get yourself and your bike to the start point and home from the finish point. These points vary according to which trip you select.
We start and finish at the same point in Marree, South Australia. Marree can be accessed via bitumen highway from Port Augusta and is suitable for 2WD and trailer travel. Vehicles can be left at Marree caravan park for the duraton of the trip.
We often have riders invite a friend or family member to tag along for the desert crossing in a 4WD. We are happy to include additional 4WDs in our convoy (strictly no trailers), with a tagalong fee applied. Please contact us if you'd like to arrange a 4WD tagalong.
We are happy for additional 4WD vehicles to join the crossing, however there are a few conditions.
You must be an experienced off-road driver and you will need to have a 4WD that is capable and equipped for the crossing, including with UHF communications. Please contact us to discuss in the first instance. We have a limit to the number of vehicles we can manage in our convoy. We do not allow tagalong vehicles to tow trailers across the desert.
We charge a consumables fee which covers your food and camping, park permits, general mechanical support, navigation and convoy assistance on the drive. You will need to provide your own fuel and come prepared with spare tyres and recovery gear. You must have your own insurances, including comprehensive vehicle, health and ambulance cover. You are responsible for your own vehicle, including 4WD recovery to Birdsville or Mt Dare in the event of an unrepairable breakdown. Vehicle recovery from the Simpson Desert can be extremely expensive, so make sure you are insured.
Please contact us if you'd like to arrange a tagalong.
